So yeah, I couldn’t resist: I swung by the Apple Store in SoHo today, just to get a few minutes of hands-on time with the iPad. It’s as pretty as you’d expect, although not beautiful enough for me to fork over the cash for one (yet).

I noticed an oddity when the now-familiar virtual keyboard slid up on the portrait orientation: As you can see above, the “F” and “J” keys each have a raised ridge on them, just like a physical keyboard. Or, rather, it would be just like a physical keyboard — except that, of course, this touchscreen keyboard is just as flat to the touch as anything else that pops up on the iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch) screen.

Others have noticed this, and have tried to discern some meaning behind it: Is there some subtle vibration-based tactile feeling when you touch-type on the iPad, somewhat emulating the traditional keyboard/typewriter keys? (I didn’t feel any when I was test-driving it, and I’m a practiced touch-typer.) Is there a future screen overlay that will match up with this software-rendered imagery?

I think that Apple is simply having a little look-and-feel fun. Either that, or it plans for iPad typing to be the second coming of the Atari 400 membrane keyboard (of which I have dim, but I guess fond, memories).

The above detail is from a cameraphone photo I snapped today, of the for-rent banner draped in the storefront window of 400 Lafayette Street. As you can see, Winick Properties is making an offline case for its online social media presence.

Although, paradoxically, I can’t find a trace of any of these channels on winick.com. No links to their Twitter or Picasa accounts, nor to their company blog, on the mothership site. Not to mention their Facebook or YouTube pages, which I can’t even find via search. It’s ironic that they’d promote those recognizable social-media badges in the physical space, and then not include them on their own online home — sorta defeats the purpose.

Not that Winick is the only real estate company around New York to paste those “follow us at” Web markers on their window-hangings. I’ve seen this tactic all around town, especially on street-level available properties. I wouldn’t say it’s standard practice yet, but more and more brokers seem to be including those colorful icons, along with the customary phone numbers and email addresses. They obviously think it’s crucial information, to show it off in a non-digital context.

Is this something unique to New York’s real estate market? Or are other cities seeing more realtors showing off their social media accessibility in this offline way? I’m curious if this is a new marketing trend for the sector.
