I was flipping through my wallet today and noticed that my Mensa member card was looking pretty ragged. So ragged, in fact, that you can clearly see that the name on it has been smudged away beyond recognition.

That, and the fact that I haven’t paid membership dues in years, has prompted me to discard this card. Yes, it’s a genius move, clearing out that extra space in my billfold. But I’m not one to brag on brilliance.

There’s quite the buzz going over Google Goggles, the mobile software that triggers search results based on just-snapped cameraphone photos.

Nevermind that the technology has been creeping forward for a little while. Or that the Mountain View Crew is restricting their gadgetware to their own Android-powering phone firmware.

No, what I’m most disappointed in is this:

That Google missed out on an obvious joke while demonstrating these goggling capabilities. For the label-scan example, it used a bottle of wine. Thus foregoing the obvious choice of a beer bottle, and thereby framing its little tool as a virtual-reality set of beer goggles.

Overall, I’d say this adds up to direct evidence that the old “don’t be evil” corporate mantra has been relegated to the dustbin of history…
