for the rest of us
While grocery shopping the other day, I spied some gingerbread cookie-flavored ice cream in the frozen-foods section. Just in time for the holidays, apparently.

It reminded me of Festivus. More specifically, it reminded me of the “Seinfeld”-inspired Ben & Jerry’s Festivus Ice Cream, a flavor which is, sadly, discontinued.

Since I’m in a bit of a squabble with my mother over what I should provide for the family Thanksgiving celebration this year (more on that in the next couple of days — it involves Tara, improbably enough), I’m wondering how hard it would be to recreate this for-the-rest-of-us frozen treat myself. I could use the aforementioned gingerbread cookie ice cream as the base, and simply add the brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and caramel. It might not be an exact match with the original, but it’d be close enough for my palate (and my relatives’).

Not that I’m much of a cook. But how hard can it be? The biggest challenge I can foresee is maybe cooking the caramel, so that it’ll blend into the ice cream that much easier. I should be able to handle that — in theory.

Rest assured, should I pull this Thanksgiving dessert off, I’ll be making a generous contribution to The Human Fund, just to keep the cosmic karma in balance. I’m sure it can use the cash infusion, since past major donors Vandelay Industries and Kramerica are doubtless being ravaged by the economic downturn.
