I bought a healthy-sized filet of catfish while grocery shopping today. It’s not the chicest of seafoods, but I like it.

Not enough people do, though, because catfish farms throughout the South are going belly-up, thanks to rising feed costs.

One theory is that something other than “catfish” would have helped maintain a healthy market:

In retrospect, the name probably should have been changed. Chilean sea bass would not have eclipsed the catfish if it were still known as the Patagonian toothfish, nor would orange roughy have become so esteemed as the slimehead.

What could have been cooked up as a nom de plume? “Whisker fish”? “Delta runner”?

Maybe it’s not too late for the catfish. Whoever’s promoting “Lake Superior White Fish” at chi-chi Los Angeles eateries could throw a little rebranding mojo to the Mississippi Delta riverfish.

So much for manufacturing interest in Major League Soccer via star power: The crowds have already lost interest in Los Angeles Galaxy big-time import David Beckham.

When the Galaxy traveled to Washington last month, attendance was off by more than 10,000 from last year’s game, even though that one was played on a weeknight, in the rain, and it was unclear if Beckham — who was injured — would play. Beckham did play and afterward attended three well-advertised invitation-only parties at D.C. nightclubs. When the Galaxy returned last month, there were none.

Crowds at the Galaxy’s other road games have been almost identical to last season even though Beckham did not play in Dallas, Toronto, Colorado and Salt Lake City a year ago because of injuries.

“Beckham may have been a larger than life character, but in America he’s become a medium-size fish in a very big pond,” said Ellis Cashmore, a professor of culture, media and sport at England’s Staffordshire University, and who has written a book on Beckham. “That engagement he’s had with European consumers — who have watched him lurch from one crisis to another, on and off the field, then restore himself — it doesn’t exist. He goes to the U.S. without that relationship and he has to be accepted as an athlete. There’s a built-in obsolescence because people cannot continue to be fascinated by a soccer player in the U.S.”

Absolutely no surprise here. And as the apathy persists, look for Beckham to get on with his post-soccer Hollywood career ambitions, which I contend is the real reason why he went for this deal in the first place:

Simply put: Beckham’s playing in MLS because he wants to be in L.A. — not the other way around.

Hopefully soccer acolytes in America are running on 30-year cycles for this type of jive. That way, we won’t have to pay attention to the pitch again until 2035 or so…
