I can’t tell you why the old “Kids in the Hall” sketch, The Terrier Song, entered my mind today. I don’t think I saw a terrier at any point.

Nevertheless, it bubbled up from my memory banks, and gave me a smile:

Terriers are my very favourite breed
They’re cute and cuddly and easy dogs to feed
They’ll bring you up whenever you are down
Terriers average 20 pounds

Actually, what really makes me laugh is when Bruce launches into the Canadian-required French rendition:

Les terriers sont mes types favourites
Jolies, charmantes
Pas de probleme a maintenir
Il donnent du joie
Quand tu es “blue”
Les terries sont a peu pres
Vingt livres

Yes, that just makes the whole vignette extra-funny to me.

Take a gander at the clip itself. I would embed it on this page, but since it’s copyrighted material, it’s only a matter of time before it’s expunged, like this previously-uploaded version.

Today, in the midst of a stream of emails, a fellow consultant dropped the following note:

…and should have it to you spitzbod.

“Spitzbod”? That’s a new one on me.

I asked what it meant, and as I suspected, it means “fast/quick”. It sounds German, a language with which I have only a passing familiarity at this point. A Google.de search brought up only about 500 results — confirming that the word’s out in the wild, but suggests it’s not particularly common. A search in regular ol’ Google.com yielded even fewer hits. Furthermore, from what I can tell, it’s used more as a sort of name/descriptor instead of as an everyday term.

A further clue: I’m told it’s a word used by the title character in “Mary Poppins”, when she was keeping her wards in line. And yet, an Amazon Book Search turned up zilch. I don’t have a copy on hand, and I don’t know that a library/bookstore visit is worth it.

So, the upshot: I’m skeptical. It certainly sounds like a catchy phrase. Kinda reminds me of “Shazbot!”

For the guys, here’s a fun(?) way to gauge where you’re at with your relationship:

On any random day — preferably not a special occasion or holiday — buy a bouquet of flowers and present it to your special gal.

The reaction it prompts should speak volumes about your relationship. If she takes it in the spirit of gift-giving and appreciates the gesture, you’ve probably got a good thing going. If she eyes the move with suspicion, outright hostility, or even bland disinterest, then you’re likely in a bad place (actually, you both are).

Obviously, if you’re one of those guys who makes flower-giving part of your daily/weekly routine, then this barometer won’t work for you. And it’s not particularly applicable for the ladies. In those cases, you’ll have to find your own relationship-o-meter.
