Still on the comeback trail, blog-wise. As mentioned earlier today, most of the site is back. And mere minutes ago, after logging on, I was able to fix one of the more obvious flaws pretty easily: Images are back in effect blog-wide!

But enough broken things remain, and a gander at the backend makes me a bit gunshy about going full-bore on postings until I’m reasonably sure it won’t all spontaneously vaporize at some point.

It’s an unsettling feeling, not being able to trust your blog — almost antithetical to the concept of blogging, isn’t it? But so it is. It’s been like this for nearly a month, so another few days won’t make a dent. I’ll take the glass-half-full outlook in the meantime.

And in that meantime, here’s my obligatory slice o’ life from today:

This morning, I discovered that I had picked up a little something extra during my walk from the subway to the office: A calling card from one of our fine feathered friends, as s/he flew overhead.

Yup, I got pooped upon. But it’s not as bad as it sounds. Instead of hitting me on the head — which I imagine I would have noticed right away — this bird hit the edge of my attache bag. As I was walking away, I guess. And it was small, and not messy, so it was easy to remove. Potential workday crisis averted.

In fact, it might have been the best possible scenario. Consider the wishful-thinking superstition that getting bird-brained thusly results in good luck, sometimes in lottery-like proportions. I figure that if I had to get hit, better that it land indirectly on my person; I’ll probably still end up with some residual good luck mojo!

And for the record: As far as I’m aware, I’ve never been hit in my life, up until today. How’s that for luck?

Well, that was all pretty inconvenient.

As you can see, I’m back — sorta. Finally got someone at BlueHost to import my SQL files. I think what was spooking the drones who were hemming and hawing on it was that, apparently, something in the file was ringing up an error message before importing would complete. Whatever it was, the guy I had on the phone just clicked through and completed the deed.

And so, ta-da! All my archived posts are back, along with my much-cherished template. Hopefully the Googlebots won’t blacklist me for leaving all those indexed hyperlinks dead for so many days. And the feedback abilities seem to be working, so I welcome all non-spammed comments! (A backhanded validation of how the blog’s back in business again: Not two minutes after I restarted it this morning, a bunch of comment/trackback spams punched through…)

Added bonus is that my AdSense ads are back in effect — gotta get that sweet-sweet advertising revenue flowing again.

But of course, things can’t be left at that. At this point, the site is functionally defunct. Random things are still snafu-ed: Images are broken, various PHP commands now mysteriously don’t work (and are leaving behind ugly code-error outputs), the comment-spam filtering seems a bit shaky… The usual nonsense. Plus, I’ve reverted back to WordPress 1.5, simply because that’s what was archived in the database. All this will be tinkered with, perhaps tonight but more likely by this weekend.

But for now, this is close enough. Provided my new postings actually publish instead of disappearing into the cyber ether, I’ll begin my traditional daily scribblings again. I’ve got a huge backlog of stuff…
