No question, The Ballooner Rebbe is an accomplished balloon-sculpture artist. He can create cartoon characters with the best of them, and he’s a definite crowd-pleaser.

But c’mon, rebbe! (Or, if you prefer, rabbi.) Where’s the balloon-sculpted menorah? That little number shouldn’t just be a stock character in your repertoire — it should be the signature performer. Start twistin’!

Earlier today, the feed headline for this news story about Raúl Castro’s wacky public comments while he pinch-hits for brother Fidel came across some webpage I was browsing.

The unusual thing: As tends to happen with accented alphabetic letters, that “ú” fouled up the feed display. The result was an output of:

R?astro Makes First Public Remarks

That “R?astro”, clumsily-rendered as it was, instantly reminded me of “The Jetsons”. Actually, it brought to my mind their trusty dog Astro — or, in his canine lisp, Rastro.

Yes, I think I’ve found a suitable nickname for the next strongman that will be running things in Havana.

Just seeing that “Rastro” name spelled out cracks me up. It has ever since my college days, when one of my dormmates gave that nickname to one of his pitchers on some now-ancient Nintendo baseball game. (No, I was neither high nor drunk when it struck me as oh-so-funny.)
