So, does anyone else think that the logo and packaging for new Stride gum is suggestive of that of some cigarette brand or another?

I can’t put my finger on it, but that shiny-silver, highly stylized “S” reminds me of a pack of smokes. The textured light-green and light-blue background on the wrapper reinforces this impression for me — hints at a menthol…

Seriously, the first time I saw ads for this stuff, I could have sworn it was some new tobacco product. When I realized it was a gum, I then initially assumed it was a nicotine gum.

I know where you think I’m going with this: Some sort of nicotine-slipping conspiracy from Cadbury Adams. Well, I’m not suggesting that. But I think Stride is definitely positioned toward more sophisticated tastes, ala cigarette marketing. The visuals certainly evoke it.

different direction
The rebranding of the Anaheim Ducks continues apace. After dropping the “Mighty” from its team name, the NHL club has ditched Arrowhead Pond, as its home arena will now be known Honda Center.

I guess Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water (actually a division of Nestle’s bottled water holdings got enough mileage out of the 13-year naming-rights agreement. Given that tenure, plus being the inaugural brandname on the building, I have a feeling Arrowhead will enjoy a lengthy residual mindshare association with the facility among Southern Californians.

This move can be interpreted as a further distancing of the Ducks franchise from its Disney roots. I recall a long-ago description of the christening of The Pond as being a “spasm of Disney cuteness”. And business concerns aside, it was such an apropos arena name, just because it fit in so creatively with the team mascot concept. So I’ll be sad to see The Pond go.

I guess it was inevitable, though. Honda could have kept the moniker, instead of the bland “Center”. But… The Honda Pond? Too close to slipping as “Honda Ponda”. Better to avoid that one.

You know this whole blogging thing is mainstreaming when Moses himself has started up a blog!

I only wish I could link to it here. But I flubbed in my daily blog-gathering. This morning, I spied a handful of orange flyers strewn about the subway platform. Their cover clearly read, “MOSES BLOG”, and featured a drawing of a bearded prophet-like character alongside it. So from that, I’m presuming it was the Moses who was proclaiming his entry into the blogosphere.

But I didn’t bend down to pick up one of the said flyers. I confess I have an aversion to scooping up subway garbage. Besides, I figured, how many Moses blogs can there be out there? I’d just take a mental note, and then use my Web-ferreting skills to locate the proper URL.

Well, a Google query led nowhere. So obviously, a certain Old Testament prophet needs to bone up on search engine optimization techniques.

So, I’m left with nothing. Which prompts the question of why I went ahead with this post. Maybe it’ll inspire some reader to track down the Moses blog, thus satisfying my curiosity? We’ll see.
