free to be
I knew I’d find something useful out of the Freelancers Union, aside from their amusing (to me) seal.

A survey of 1,200 NYC freelancers in October 2005 yielded this Top Ten list of the best workplaces for independent contractors in New York:

1. Conde Nast
2. Time Warner
3. BBC
4. MTV Networks
5. HBO
6. MJM Creative
7. The New York Times
8. Curious Pictures
9. McGraw-Hill
10. Viacom

Overloaded with media companies. No surprise, taking into account the labor pool, the location and the breadth of the industry in that location. If you’re in the creative field and don’t want to be tied down to any one job, New York’s the place to be.

Of course, I’m thinking “best” is highly subjective in this case. Freelancers generally get treated like dirt even in the best working relationships. Key difference here is that a freelancer here has many more options if one particular company is no good.

  1. I had the opportunity to freelance once for a company that had just laid me off, and I found it very educational. On one hand, they wanted to keep me at arm’s length and be ready to drop me at a moment’s notice again. On the other hand, they were suddenly listening *and agreeing* to things I had been saying for the past two years.

  2. Yeah, re-entering an office as an agent-for-hire does create a new dynamic. You go from being part of the background fabric to being an outside-the-box thinker — even if your thoughts are the same as they always were! Groupthink, perceptional adjustment, whatever.

I had the same sort of experience just before leaving Florida. I was re-hired for specific tasks, though, so not too much idea-churn.

  3. PERMALANCER PROTEST…

When are freelancers not freelancers? When they’re office-staff fixtures, or “permalancers”, at MTV/Viacom, to the point where they’re not going to take it anymore:
“The dirty little secret is that they used to treat us l…
