Like I said before, it ain’t none of my business what Brad and Angelina name their baby daughter.

That said, it’s curious to see that both Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston may have influenced the selection of “Shiloh”.

I guess Hollywood is like any small-town cocoon…

in buzz we trustBehold, the seal for the Freelancers Union, also known as Working Today.

No, I don’t quite get it either. I mean, I sorta understand the symbolism being evoked by using bees — “busy bees” or “worker bees”. But isn’t the beehive something like overkill? Is it supposed to represent the workplaces that those free-flying bees are trying to penetrate? Or is it a honeypot hangout collective for freelancing insects of all shapes and sizes?

Aside from that confusion, I appreciate the old-style union label look. It’s evocative of the traditional hand-drawn seals developed by American unions in the 1920s and ’30s. Given that the FU wasn’t formed until 1995, it’s a commendable throwback design decision, versus some ultramodern attempt.

Yes, once again I’m over-dissecting media imagery. But I have more of an excuse this time. At the top of this month, the Freelancers Union rolled out a bunch of poster ads throughout New York’s subway system. The advertisements are pretty distinctive, typically employing bold-colored block-image backgrounds with all-caps type (here’s an example). So they’ve had an effect on me. Whoever the ad agency is, it’s earned its fees.

Oh, as for the union itself: Contradictory in nature, in that the chief reason a lot of companies hire freelancers is to avoid paying benefits and other organized labor trappings. But then, providing a Portable Benefits Network, independent of employers, is the main reason for the FU’s existence. As a full-time consultant, I’m feeling the drift of the no-benefits lifestyle right now (although I’m not looking to join up with these guys anytime soon).
