canes were ableI was hoping for a Stanley Cup Finals that would be one for the ages. I think I got it.

Congratulations to the Carolina Hurricanes for nabbing their first-ever Cup, winning 3-1 tonight to take the series from the Edmonton Oilers four games to three. Just when it looked like the ‘Canes were primed to blow it by allowing Edmonton to come back from a 3-1 series deficit, Carolina did just enough to secure the win. Thriller to the end.

Carolina wins this year, Tampa Bay won the whole thing the last time the Cup was awarded (in 2004, thanks to last year’s lockout season). I’d say the Southeast Division is building a case for itself as a bona fide NHL powerhouse.

The best post-game quip tonight: ESPN’s Steve Levy says (I’m paraphrasing), “Celebrations tonight all over the Carolina Triangle Region; and if it’s possible for a triangle to have a fourth point, that point would be in Hartford.”

Most apt, as I’m pretty sure I spied somebody on the ice, during the Cup presentation ceremony on NBC’s postgame coverage, wearing a vintage Whalers blue-and-green jersey, and he was waving his arms in celebration. Accordingly, I’ll extend a congrats to my friend Tom, Connecticut native who attended at least one Whalers game in his life.

hot and now
Maybe I’m simply reading too much into these things.

But when I saw this window display for a West 57th Street Gap, boldly displaying that “White Hot. White Now.” tagline, the first thing I thought was, “None of the mannequins are wearing white.” Weird.

After that, I was instantly reminded of last month’s Kenneth Cole “Change Is Good As Long As It’s Going In The White Direction” curiosity:
kenny's direction
So, that crackpot musing about a white supremacist meme running through New York fashion outlets, brazenly being relayed through store windows? I ain’t saying it’s true. I ain’t saying it ain’t, either.

I’m not sure why it took them so long to come up with this: A consortium of New Jersey casino operators have financed the Atlantic City Express Service, a two-and-a-half-hour direct train between Penn Station and the gambling mecca.

Why? Because it’s currently a pain to get there:

Atlantic City-bound travelers coming from New York by train must now ride the Northeast Corridor line to Trenton, take a local train to Philadelphia and then transfer to the Atlantic City rail line.

Only the most rabid gambling fiend would go through all that. The only alternative is the highway, and since a lot of New Yorkers don’t drive, that means a stinky bus for two or three hours. Most enticing.

AC is resorting to this because it’s now got real competition in the gaming biz. Foxwoods (adjust volume accordingly) in Connecticut is closer to the City and offers just about as much as south Jersey. And most probably, Sullivan County in upstate New York will sprout its own Mohegan Indian casino houses at some point. The Atlantic City boys can see the writing on the wall.

But I’m wondering if it’s too late. AC’s got three decades of glitz as the local near-Vegas, but it’s all about proximity. If the same thrills are an hour’s time closer, people will happily go north instead of south.

Despite the terror she felt during Shiloh’s birth, Angelina Jolie still has a lot more love to give. So she’s going back to the adoption well, pledging to add one more orphan to her brood.

I’d like to offer an outside-the-box possibility for the next Brangelina familial acquisition:

Y’know, anyone can adopt a cute little pipsqueak. It’s been done many times over. But how often do you hear about someone adopting a 35-year-old New York male? Who just celebrated his birthday? And who’s typing this out right now?? (And who wouldn’t mind coming into a Hollywood-sized fortune?)

Just food for thought. A bold couple would jump at it…

I’ve already mentioned my mini-vacation to Tampa Bay later this weekend. But in the interest of keeping the news front-and-center, for any Bay area readers who pop in here only occasionally, I’ll maintain a short countdown from now until I leave on Thursday night.

Sure, I could craft one of those “sticky posts”, situated top-of-page constantly and designed to exist outside the continuity of the regular blog posts. But that would involve installing a plugin and all that. This way is much lazier, and probably more effective.

Crossing my fingers on the weather…
