Are you already feeling an indefinable dread over the coming of… THIS TUESDAY??

Sorry to be so dramatic. But it’s not every year that the date June 6th, 2006 — in its more jitter-inducing form, 06/06/06 — comes around. Many a pseudo-religious nut is hand-wringing over the Devilish numerology of the upcoming calendar square. And of course, those crypto-Satanists in Hollywood contribute, seizing upon the golden opportunity to release the remake of The Omen on the day of sixes (hoping that mitigates an unusual Tuesday movie premiere).

I hate to ruin a quality Christian freakout, but I’m impelled to point out: Archaelogical evidence indicates that the true mark of the Beast is actually “616″, instead of the popular “666″. A misdialed number, in a sense.

So all you spiritual number-crunchers should really be worried about today, 06/01/06. You should ignore those extra zeros, of course. Or else, gear up for the coming Friday that will have 06/16 tagged onto it. At the very least, have your blood chill at the timestamp for this post!

  1. Isn’t it funny how impulsively people will engage in a “mystification with numbers” yet without giving any thought to their indulgence?

For example, this date of 06/06/06 has now been with us-just in the A.D. epoch-20 times starting in year 6, then again in year 60, then (dropping the hundreds portion as we seem to do) in years 106, 206, 306… right through to our contemporary 2006.

Have we had nineteen previous ‘days of the devil’ befall us without incident? If so, why should the 20th be any more significant than the previous 19?

Or am I missing something? Hey, here’s a thought: can anyone recall reading about, or use their ingenuity to research, any significant religious scenarios happening on any of the previous 06/06/06 dates?

Taking Costa’s point about it being 616 that’s the significant number poses even more frequent occurrences since EVERY 16th of June in EVERY year of our A.D. epoch, we’ve had a 06/16 opportunity for the devil to make his mischief.

Don’t misunderstand me in this, please… I LOVE playing with numbers… I’m always finding interesting correlations and equations among numbers that I have to deal with so this comment is meant to be understood as a mini-rant against those who see the pattern today but who ignore how many other times the pattern has appeared, yet who ignore all those other times as irrelevant or insignificant.

Okay, I guess I’d better shut up now and get back to work :-)

  2. I feel bad for those in China. At least with our calendar we get a warning sign. In China it’s year 4704…. They won’t even know what hit them. Ditto for those that use the Indian, Islamic, Jewish, Ethopian, Persian, Balinese, and Baha’i Calendars. Now that I think of it, I hope I picked the right religion.

  3. I go with South Park’s assessment and figure the Mormons are the only ones who will ascend to Heaven…

That’s the beauty of numerology: The results discerned from it are so flexible, you can pick and choose meaning. Built-in strife.

  4. Another sign of the apocalypse

My TiVo recorded NFL Live this afternoon on its own whim, but for some reason the show it ran around 2 minutes short and I was treated to the beginning of Jim Rome is Burning (a show I have mocked in the past under its previous, presumably untrademarka…

You already knew it was coming, and now it’s here: June 6th, 2006, the heebie-jeebiest day for the next century or so.

Like last time, I tried to set an appropriately ominous timestamp. Since it’s not possible to show the time of day as the 66th m…
