David Letterman may have played out his years-running joke about his quest to land Oprah, but it certainly paid off handsomely: The much-hyped appearance garnered “Late Show” its fourth-highest ratings ever.
Not only that, but the strong numbers for rival “Tonight Show” suggest that Oprah drew in tons of viewers who don’t usually stay up late. Which can be taken in one of two ways: This was an isolated spike for Letterman, and there’ll be little permanent benefit from it; or it could be the catalyst for Letterman’s overtaking Jay Leno in the late-night ratings chase, much like the Hugh Grant incident provided the boost that put Leno ahead of Letterman some ten years ago.
Here’s hoping Letterman pulls ahead. It’s time that late night stopped sucking.
And another bit of late night TV news that should excite folks:
It was announced this week that after 13 years, NBC will bring back the wrestling show “Saturday Night Main Event”. For those who may not remember, the then-WWF (now WWE) had the 11:30 PM time slot once a month when “Saturday Night Live” took a break. No news on the time slot or if it will be a weekly show or a monthly “SNL” break.

Damn, I was hoping NBC would bring back the XFL instead
(and who’s the loser who’s keeping that domain alive??)
It’s a testament to how worthless that skit show has become that I fully expect the wrestling shenanigans to be far funnier than anything “SNL” puts on the air…

THE LETTERMAN-O’REILLY SMACKDOWN
After Bill O’Reilly’s ambush by David Letterman last night, how long do you figure it’ll be before “The Late Show” is added to O’Reilly’s enemies list?
I watched the whole thing last night, meaning I saw the…
