So, is anyone really buying this depiction of Anheuser-Busch CEO August Busch IV as TV commercial spokesman, pitching Bud Select in a bar?

Look at that unbuttoned button-down, sans tie. Casually sauntering around in a happenin’ nightclub, surrounded by 20- and 30-something hipsters. Meaning, by extension, that this latest generation of Busch is just as hip, and thus more relatable to that alcohol-consuming demographic.

Please. This guy is a beer-brewing blueblood, worth a few hundred million dollars. I’ll bet all the Bavarian hops A-B grows that IV has never stepped into the type of club shown here. He looks about as at-home in this environment as a Buddhist monk would.

What’s more, a friend of mine pointed out that the bottle Busch is holding in this TV spot isn’t even uncapped. So much for looking natural.

The reason A-B is utilizing their youngish-looking chief executive is that beer is losing ground to liquor and wine, and so an image jazzing-up is in order. I think they’d be better off getting someone more life-like, though. Or, failing that, they could always go with the old reliable babes-in-bikinis option.

For someone who claims that our northern neighbor doesn’t merit much consideration, The Weekly Standard’s Matt Labash certainly went to town on Canuck-land:

Give [Canadian sociologist and author Michael] Adams points for cheek. His is, after all, a country that didn’t bother to draft its own constitution until 1982, that kept “God Save the Queen” as its national anthem until 1980, and that still enshrines its former master’s monarch as its head of state. Her Canadian title is “Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories Queen (breath), Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.” Maybe they should change their national anthem again, to Britney Spears’s “I’m A Slave 4 U.”

So compelling was Labash’s (hmm, that sounds alot like a French-Canadian name…) trash-talking that Peter Carlson wonders if it won’t inspire a march for the border:

I loved that story, but it made me nervous. I was afraid [Standard founder William] Kristol might read it and immediately call for the invasion of Canada. I support our troops, but I’d hate to see them bogged down in the snows of Saskatchewan, besieged by snowshoe-wearing, Molson-swigging insurgents armed with hockey pucks and Gordon Lightfoot CDs.

Several months back, I got a an email from Dan Li (currently self-described as “a female graduate student with a guy’s name at Northwestern University”). She was conducting a survey about blogs and bloggers, part of her work toward a Master’s degree at Marquette University’s College of Communication, and invited me to participate.

I did. And now, the “Why Do You Blog?” survey results are complete and online.

Li got a good turnout: Of the 476 emails that got through to bloggers, she garnered a 60 percent response rate — excellent for any study like this. So it should represent a good cross-section of the blogging universe.

I’ve only skimmed the full results; I’ll have to give it a more thorough reading later this week. It’s full academic-mode, as you’d expect. It contains a lot of specialized jargon like “computer-mediated communication” and “negative avoidance”, which either attracts or repels you, depending on your appetite for such studies.

This one tidbit really stood out during my first sweep:

Television was defined as the “least specialized medium” for the capability of “serving many different personal and political needs” (Katz, et al., p. 164). In this sense, the Internet is even less specialized than television for its multimedia attributes-the Internet integrates the characteristic of print and broadcast media as well as interpersonal channel.

As I say, I’ll have to delve deeper into this.

I’d be surprised if there haven’t been other academic studies of the blogging dynamic, but this is the only one I know of. The Pew Internet & American Life has been focusing more and more of its research into blogging, but not specifically on bloggers per se. Li’s work should form a good foundation for further examination.

I do recall, after taking the survey, emailing Li back and telling her that the structure of the survey questions was a little rough — not terrible, but not as good as it should have been for a serious survey study. She appreciated the input, but obvious, couldn’t make any changes mid-stream. Looking back over the questions now, I don’t quite recall what my beef was; I thought it might have been the lack of response options or something like that, but that’s not apparent to me now. Since I myself design and direct a far-reaching annual business survey, I have a certain eye for this kind of thing.

I’m sure Florida State University wideout De’Cody Fagg has heard it all before.

But now that he’s starting for the Seminoles and making plays, the play-by-play announcements of his name is making me double-take a bit more.

Maybe I should keep in mind the British colloquialism for cigarette. “Fagg is smokin’ ” would be an appropriate declaration during his more noteworthy performances.
