This question was put to me earlier today. I wasn’t able to come up with an answer. It’s not like I think I’m a finished product, or have no further ambitions; but for whatever reason, nothing came to mind.

I still can’t think of anything, really. I can’t sing particularly well, nor juggle, nor act, nor build things. And I can’t say I feel any sort of loss for those deficiencies, either.

Maybe I’ll think of some skill I would like to possess. Meantime, comment away and share with me the talent or talents you wish you could possess. Make it lively!

  1. When I was a little girl, people would ask, “If you could have one superpower what would it be?” and I would always say, “The Ultimate Power of Persuasion!!!!” I would get a lot of concerned looks for that one, as if I was some diabolical child we needed to keep close tabs on.

Although once I hit law school, nobody seemed to think it was such a nefarious thing to want. :)

I still think it covers just about anything else that is fairly impossible and still truly desirable, but I suppose I wouldn’t be mad if I had X-Ray vision, or if I could play pool.

I wish I was a little better at origami, too. I always think I’m great, but I always show myself up when push comes to shove.

  3. I think the two of you are on a similar track. Transience could be President, R* could be her Attorney General…

  6. are we using the word “talent” - in contrast with “skill” - as that demonstrable ability innately resident within a person despite little or no effort to acquire or develop that ability? if so, then it sounds to me like the question might accurately be re-stated as, “What would you like to be able to do if you could do it well without having to work very hard to do it well?”

my answer to that question would be, “just about anything: martial arts… play piano… sing… paint… stand-up comedy… write eloquent and persuasive essays about significant social issues… easily develop rapport with others via intuition/empathy… run a marathon… hunt for and grow my own food vs. modern-day supermarket fare… race a car in the daytona 500… calculate pi in my head to 1,000 places… predict successful investments… i could go on, but i believe my thoughts on this are fairly clear by now :-)
