The plan for this evening is to catch the new release Wedding Crashers. I’ll be curious to see if the movie even comes close to living up to the hype generated by a months-long marketing blitz, centered mostly around the official website.

Of course, the casting already gives a strong hint as to what to expect from this flick. Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are members of The Frat Pack, the latest incarnation of an instantly-recognizable Hollywood actors posse.

The other members of this Pack: Wilson’s brother Luke, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Will Ferrell.

While there’s no denying the juvenile nature of their comic stylings (i.e., right up the typical and wannabe frat brother’s alley), it seems all these guys are too old to truly be in sync with the college zeitgeist. Why no 20-somethings to carry out this role? I guess resonant comedy needs seasoning…

I’d include an acknowledgement of Chris Farley and David Spade as pioneers for this group. They had the makings of an Abbott & Costello-style dynamic in Tommy Boy and Black Sheep, before Farley’s death.

At a time when the movie biz is in uncharted waters — a box-office slump that might be more prolonged than anything seen before — having a set of faces that will deliver exactly what audiences expect is gold. These guys play their cards right, they can cash in big over the next couple of years.
