Population Statistic: Read. React. Repeat.

Nothing gets me more down than website problems. Because I have no patience for them, and every second I spend tinkering to fix them is excrutiatingly soul-draining.

With that in mind…

I’ve finally gotten the site live again, but it’s far from fully functional. I’ve spent the last five hours wrestling with it; I’m finished for the day. I’ll come back to it tomorrow and hopefully get it to a point where it’s tolerable. As far as what I’ve done:

I went ahead and upgraded my WordPress installation, from 1.2 to the most current ( — as if that means anything). I don’t think the WP version has anything to do with the problems I’ve been having here; I still maintain 1and1 fouled something up. But, since I’ll be switching hosting companies as a result of all this, I figured I would have to bite the bullet on that anyway, and I might as well work out the bugs there early.

It’s been as much of a pain in the butt as I thought it would be. For some reason, having the blog come off the root (populationstatistic.com/, instead of populationstatistic.com/wordpress) is a lot harder to achieve than it should be. I’ve put in a temporary fix, in the form of a redirect script that takes you from the root (probably how 90% of all visitors get here) to the /wordpress display.

The permalinks, comment forms, pagination and various other things are also fouled up, because of various incompatibilities between 1.2 and 1.5.etc.

It’s looking like I’m going to have to redo my templates from scratch. Note that it’s templates: Not only the main index page, but also the per-post view, the comment boxes, and whatever else is in here. I’m not relishing it, even considering that 1.5 supposedly has utilites that help you design templates.

I really don’t know why this shit has to be so complicated. The geeks behind WP development laud how flexible the program is, but that’s so much hype. If you actually want to customize it beyond the defaults — most of which don’t conform to any standard blog features — it takes an inordinate amount of code-editing.

Anyway. Hopefully I’ll get it straight by tomorrow evening. Commenting is out of commission until then; feel free to email me instead.
