It looks like I’m one of the last ones to hear about Brian Collins and the mushrooming of his SportsCenteresque “boom goes the dynamite” catchphrase.

Maybe I shouldn’t rely upon David Letterman to keep me in the know on stuff like this.

How can Collins take his wordplay to even greater heights? Here’s a retro thought: Get Jimmie “Kid Dyn-O-Mite” Walker to start saying it.

Everyone knows you never get anywhere in the music business unless you have a totally kickass name for your act.

Of course, there are exceptions.

If you’re still struggling to make it out of the local scene, here are some helpful hints about avoiding the common you-only-think-it’s-cool cliches.

Included are some critiques of the names adopted by Tampa Bay-area bands (none of which will ever make the bigtime, following a long-established pattern hereabouts). The slam on self-parodying metalheads Dreamzfate had me chuckling:

“Just name your band Queensryche and get it over with.” - Brady

Out of the favorite names, I think Cuban Sandwich Crisis has just the right goofy lilt to it. I was disappointed to see the few local groups I’m aware of, like Vacation Bible School and Dumbwaiters, go unnoticed.

Personally, on a big-time level, The Dead Kennedys struck a chord with my teenaged self.

Nothing like the start of hurricane season to obliterate a weekend. Tropical Storm (for now) Arlene, while missing the Tampa Bay area by a wide margin, will still dump bucketloads of rain here until at least Saturday night.

That’s assuming the flooding doesn’t float us all away. And it’s not like I haven’t gotten my fill of turbulent subtropical weather. (Of course, some of us use the resulting downtime procreatively.)

So I guess I’m stuck indoors pretty much all weekend. Luckily(?), I’ve got three visiting dogs to play with.

A couple of bad signs for me during lunch today:

- Despite years of practice, for some reason I had a hell of a time handling the chopsticks while eating my roast chicken and Chinese vegetables. I kept dropping food fragments like a bad habit. I suspect the reason was because I chose to wear a white shirt today; and so, my subconscious mind was determined to inflict a large, noticable stain that I would have to wear for the rest of the day. The bright side: Despite far too many close calls, I managed to keep my shirt clean.

- My accompanying fortune cookie was empty. Not even a blank piece of paper where a fortune should have been — just a hollow shell. That creeps me out, as such a thing should. It’s gotta be bad karma, or feng-shui, or something.
