all the world is waiting for youThe Amazon princess is seemingly closer to making it onto the big screen, as Joss “Buffy” Whedon has signed on to write and direct a long-planned Wonder Woman movie.

This doesn’t mean that the flick’s ever going to be made; until production actually begins, with a set cast and everything, no movie development deal is ever “real”. And considering Hollywood’s recent poor track record in this area — both Catwoman and Elektra bombed bigtime — it would seem that the timing’s not at all right for this one, even utilizing the most recognizable woman superhero.

Still, it’s a step forward. If they actually nail down an actress for the lead role, I’ll start believing:

No word yet on who’ll play Whedon’s leading lady Diana, but the Internet rumor mill has been churning out names like Rosario Dawson, Jessica Biel, Buffy vets Charisma Carpenter and Eliza Dushku, and even Kim Basinger, for an older, wiser Wonder Woman.

Feh. None of those options do anything for me; and that “older, wiser” theme with a 50-year-old WW has a snowball’s chance in Hell of coming about. Of course, that’s not to say that a supporting role for Lynda Carter as Queen Hera Hippolyta (thanks to Kirby for correcting me on this) is out of the question…

Actually, I seem to recall a long-ago rumor of Jennifer Connelly being considered for the role. Me likey. Although, with the Oscar win, I kinda doubt she’d go for it. Besides, Connelly’s already had her turn in the celluloid superhero schtick with Hulk.

  2. One more name from the rumor mill: Lauren Graham. I would wholeheartedly approve, especially since Whedon’s writing.

  5. You just gotta know where to look…

As far as movie/fantasyland goes, Connelly is pretty bombshelin’. Also, just off the top of my head: Kiera Knightley, Kate Beckinsale, Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie.
