kiss me
I first got wind of Giantmicrobes a few months back, when they were displayed on an episode of “The Graham Norton Effect”. But the article in yesterday’s paper reminded me of them (and reinforced the idea that they were indeed real, and not just a gag).

You too can snuggle up with cutsie versions of such nasty disease-inducers like Black Death, Ebola (which looks more than a little bit like E.T.), and even our good friend, the common cold.

I’m wondering why only HIV and Hepatitis rate for inclusion in the special “Professional” section. No question, those two are hard-core pestilences; but are you telling me the Ebola virus isn’t as bad?

Aside from the proscribed educational purposes, I can see making a fun game out of these things. Buy the whole collection, then spend hours flinging them at your friends! Every time someone gets hit by a particular germ, announce “Infected! You’ve got Sleeping Sickness!” Fun for all ages.

A darker notion: Would it be the blackest of jokes to infect each of these things with their actual diseases, ala the Native American smallpox blankets epidemic?

The pink little single-cell varmint pictured above is Kissing Disease, aka Mono. My boss’ daughter just came down with a nasty case of this, right on the eve of her final exams. I don’t know if getting a fuzzy representation of the disease would cheer her or depress her.
