suxers
At the moment, proof that the Web is far from being the all-inclusive repository of human knowledge that it’s cracked up to be is manifested by my inability to find a primo quote I remember regarding the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers, the worst-ever team in NBA (and possibly all of North American sports) history.

I don’t remember if I read it or heard it several years ago, but I definitely came across it. It came out of the mouth of one of the unfortunate hoopsters who played on a squad that went 9-73 in an 82-game schedule (including a 15-game losing stretch to open the season and set the tone). It went something like this:

“For other teams, we ended losing streaks and extended winning streaks.”

No better way to illustrate this particular futility.

Incidentally, I keep thinking that it was the old Washington Bullets (now Wizards) who accomplished this feat. But that’s just me jumbling up sports, as it was really the NHL’s Washington Capitals who went 8-67-5 in 1974-75, their inaugural expansion year.

And to follow this trend, the above two sad-sack performances were followed by the infamous 1976 0-14 Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL. Too bad Major League Baseball didn’t contribute to this groovy ’70s sporting stink-o-rama…

  1. Nine and seventy-three works out to .109.

As of last night, the Oklahoma City Thunder were resounding to the tune of .100. Not my favorite tune.

  2. Better ship that old Suxers quote over to Thunderers HQ…

It won’t be much consolation now, but you might develop even more of an affection for the team because of this present crapiness. I was around when two of Tampa Bay’s teams — Buccaneers (Yuck-aneers) and Lightning (Frightening) went from perennial bottom-feeders to champions (and just missed the Rays just-completed World Series run). I actually found myself perversely missing the lean years when the winning started…
