Despite being a political science major, I have to say that it’s never occurred to me to either host or attend a Presidential Election Night party.

But this is New York, and it’s the first time during my adulthood that I’ve been here in a White House election year. So only now am I seeing what a big to-do this Tuesday is hereabouts, second only to Washington’s social circles.

Especially this year:

“We held a little election party four years ago,” [bar owner Jim] Carden said, referring to an event held at Floyd, another Brooklyn bar he owns, “but we’ve seen double the number of people showing up for each debate.

“I think the big difference is that people are viewing the election in a much more social context because it’s such a historic event,” Mr. Carden added. “They know they’re living through history, they know it’s something they’re going to tell their kids about, and they want to be there with other people when it happens.”

Indeed, it’ll be an historical first regardless of who wins the election, so I guess that merits some merriment while counting up the Electoral College votes as the evening stretches out.

Myself, I think I’ll hit China 1, right up Avenue B, for their Democrat-leaning soiree:

Aniticipating a long night of election returns, China 1 is hosting an “Obama Pajama Party,” so party-goers can get comfy cozy in front of several large screens that will project the elections results starting at 6 p.m. until the wee hours of the morning. Partygoers can also jam out in their jammies to live music when not glued to the TV screens, or put down a few sake “o’bombas” at the bar.

No PJs for me, as I don’t own even one set. But I’ll be all over those o’bombas — either to celebrate, or else to drown the sorrows.

  1. Wonder if Pajamas Media will send a correspondent to China 1….

(I tossed my last pair of PJs in, um, 1969.)

  2. There’s definitely sartorial affinity for PJs Media with this event. But politically speaking, attending a preemptive Obama victory party? I think any of their NYC reps would rather be blowing their brains out — which they likely will be tomorrow night, once the writing is on the wall…

That said, I could be persuaded to do some liveblogging from the pajama-jam, via iTouch. Probably a longshot, though.

  3. THE AGE OF OBAMA…

So where were you when history was made last night?
I was at the aforementioned Obama Pajama Party on Avenue B. It was actually pretty short on the PJs, which I was glad about since neither I nor my date went that route. It was packed to the gills, pr…
