I'm guessing you'd have to initiate the process by clicking a "Get Updates" button, but then you probably could indeed leave the iPod in your car, while it continues to download the latest, then automatically power down once it's done. Irrelevant for the non-podcast listener like me. But I can see the potential for that feature being a significant selling point for that audience.
