Molly Ringwald seized upon the exposure she got during the Breakfast Club MTV reunion* to announce plans to star in a sequel to another of her memorable screen moments, 1984’s Sixteen Candles.

In a word: No.

In a few more words (you didn’t think I was going to let it go at that, did you?), I can envision two likely premises for this needless revisit to John Hughes-land:

1. Samantha Baker is as much a neurotic mess in her late 30s as she was at age 16, and can’t get it straight until she reunites with her Mr. Right; and/or

2. Sam now has a 16-year-old daughter, who’s going through reruns of her mom’s teenaged travails.

There’s probably a market for this. But really, some things belong in their proper era, and Sixteen Candles is one of them.

*Some reunion, when (arguably) the two biggest stars from the movie declined to show up, and the principal had to fill-in. What, Carl the Janitor wasn’t available?
