Eric at Off Wing Opinion was interviewed about his sports blog stylin’, and he shares the Q&A.
Very insightful. The one bit that stood out for me:
But here’s the funny thing: Some of the posts I’m most proud of, my readers don’t give a whit about. And then there are some throwaway posts that attract comments and links from all over the place without warning. That I can’t explain.
Granted, some posts aren’t designed to elicit much response, and I guess my presentation often leaves little more to be said on a particular topic. But often, I’ll write a post, like this one, that I expect to generate some input from others, and am disappointed when none materializes. Conversely, sometimes a post I don’t think much about when writing it unexpectedly gets way more commenting than I’d expect.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s experienced this. I suppose that’s part of the deal with blogging, and with most media in general: No matter how much you think you can predict audience reaction, the crowd can trick you.

I posted a couple religion posts a while back that I thought would be read and ignored. I received 20+ comments on each.
I’ve given up trying to predict reaction. I throw out what I have, make the sign of the cross, and let the chips fall.

It’s happened to me a few times. For me, the celebrity name-dropping posts seem to be a sure ticket to attract comment; since I rarely devote much thought to them (there’s something antithetical about pondering celeb dish too deeply), I’m surprised every time they pull in all the chatter.
There’s a perceived inverse relationship with the posts you sweat over: Because you feel you’ve invested so much thought and care into crafting it, you expect it to deliver in terms of getting reaction. When that doesn’t happen, you feel cheated.
Then again, there are other bloggers who get buttloads of feedback to every post, regardless of what’s written. There’s no sure formula.
