blowfishin'
Yes, that was indeed Darius Rucker, of Hootie & The Blowfish fame, donned in a rhinestone cowboy suit for a surreal Burger King Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch commercial.

Angsty Hootie fans might deplore it, but I loved the spot, despite watching it but once. I instantly recognized the jingle as a parody of “Big Rock Candy Mountain”, which is one of my favorite folk songs; I guess that helped endear the commercial to me. The overall cheesiness, and inclusion of various b-list starlets/models, took it the rest of the way.

As usual, Crispin Porter + Bogusky served up this quirky work, continuing a series of work that’s distinguishing BK’s advertising/marketing campaign.

UPDATE: In case the Pingback below isn’t obvious enough, the video clip of this commercial is now available for download.

  1. Isn’t this a little reminiscient of the cowboy from the old Pee Wee Herman show? He’s been out of work for a while. I smell a whopper of a lawsuit!

    Comment by Kirby — 02/26/2005 @ 10:17:57 PM

  2. Very insightful! In fact, the whole look and tone of the spot seems inspired by “Pee-wee’s Playhouse”, especially the vibrant colors. I wonder how much of a direct influence it was.

If they had gotten the original Cowboy Curtis (none other than Laurence Fishburne) instead of Hootie, it would be a lock.

Incidentally, with all the babe-age on display, it’s too bad Paris Hilton is nowhere to be seen, despite earlier word that she would be pimping for BK, with David LaChapelle directing (LaChapelle directed this spot). At least, I don’t recognize Paris among the models; and if she was in it, there would have been loads of publicity over it.

  12. Nit-picky, but it was NOT “Darius Rucker donned in a rhinestone cowboy suit.” It was “Darius Rucker decked out in a rhinestone cowboy suit” or “Darius Rucker resplendant in a rhinestone cowboy suit” or “Darius Rucker wearing a rhinestone cowboy suit.”

“Don” means “to put on” not “to wear.”

I thought it was a hoot (pardon the pun), but the King pushing the swing (or waking up in bed with some guy in the previous ad) creeps me out.

  14. the whole thing is a wonderful ode to fetishes and surreal pop associations and some kind of homoerotic foofery with the Wizard of Oz mise en scene and dancing ethnic cowboys ( the fries or at least one of them were strategically “placed”).

absolutely easier to watch this commercial if you want to drop acid but dont really want to drop acid.

  18. So is there a complete cast list out there?
Because I do reckognize a couple faces, I just don’t know their names. I thought the blonde girl on the train pump car might be ex-American Idol Kimberly Caldwell.
My wife’s guess was that the first girl is Aguielera. She doesn’t look enough like Jenna Jamison.

    Comment by Kev — 03/01/2005 @ 10:46:38 PM

  24. I recognize Hootie, the blonde at the tree is a model according to someone who worked on the commercial. Brook burke is on the swing at the end (ugh). Vida is a model from FHM magazine on the railroad car. These are the only ones i know or recognize. I think the twins, male and female are unknowns, as are the rest of the cast. I came to learn this was directed by David Lachapell. A awesome photographer who uses celebrities in surreal enviroments he creates. What a great piece, it slipped right under the FCC’s nose and no million dollar fines.

  25. The blonde girl with the long wavy hair is the famous (or B-list famous) porn star named Mary Carey who ran for governor of California in the last election. She’s been on VH1 and interviewed by other stations. Can someone else confirm this? I’m about 80% sure it’s her.

I new it was a washed up Hootie, thought it was Jenna, new it was Brooke Burke, loved the sex appeal and overall was very aroused by it. Subliminal and not so Subliminal Sex Selling all the way with a twist of Psychodelia. I never would have thought BK would let this out into the mainstream. These comments are funny as hell too, but I’m surprised that no one seems to notice the other pop culture theme here. Any one remember Hee Haw from the 70s? Come and get it! Comment by Hansel — 03/12/2005 @ 03:03:14 AM

  41. The “christina” girl is nude/bathing suit model Carolyn Bolin. The 3 dallas cheerleaders are actual dallas cheerleaders, one who’s name I think is Monica Crawnas.

Brooke Burke and Hootie we know of course. The asian girl laying bricks I do not know. One of the girls pumping the railcar is butt nude model Vida Guerra (she has Vida on her shorts). She is famous for her asset. The other girl I dont know, but I assume another nude model famous for her butt.

The Twins are the Sorrel twins, who have been in a bunch of B-movies, and are pretty well known for not wearing clothes themselves.
